The Broadband Solutions Department manages a
model of the BT ATM broadband network, which provides a service to such
organisations as Banks and Building Societies for managing the routine data of
their businesses. The model is a small-scale replica of the BT Network and is
used to prove new hardware and software upgrades before their introduction into
the Network proper.
The individual hardware components of the model
need to be identified technically and their location tracked since these
expensive items are often loaned to other company models etc. This is achieved
via an Access database whose data is imported into a netViz representation of
the ATM model.
Each hardware item is drawn in CorelDraw,
converted to a Windows Metafile (wmf) and built into a bespoke catalogue. The
netViz representation is then created, drilling down from suites of cabinets to
individual connectors, which show the main interconnections of the model
network diagram. netViz is thus used to present information of the components
of the model both as regards location as well as connectivity.
Clicking on each item gives the user current
information as to its location and identity. This service is available to any
one within the Division via a WAN network.
NetViz Benefits: ·
- Accurate representation of catalogue
items
- Tracking of valuable assets
- Management of change processes
- Visualisation of the test model in a
consistent, distributed format
